How long has it been since you last played the N64 GoldenEye classic? I'm sure like most people, it's been years. A lot of GoldenEye Wii players likely don't even have their N64 console anymore.

If you do have that inner craving and wonder about GoldenEye N64, there is still hope for you. Since I'm such a big fan of the original N64 GoldenEye I need to tell you about GoldenEye N64 in 2010. The game is more than 10 years old but it's still going strong.

First off, if you don't know, I'm talking about the original N64 GoldenEye on the PC and NOT the mod GoldenEye Source.

GoldenEye N64 is playable online and flawlessly. You can buy USB adapters that allow you to use the original controllers. If you don't have original controllers, you can buy them at Amazon. The USB adapters are also at amazon. Not only is the original GoldenEye N64 playable on your PC and playable online flawlessly, but you can also play many many new multiplayer levels. Yes, you can even play Perfect Dark levels in GoldenEye. Yes, it sounds strange, but it's true. In fact, there are entirely new GoldenEye N64 levels that have been created. And yes, all of these are playable online.

Aha, but this all sounds too good to be true right? In a way, yes it is. Here is why.

What is a GoldenEye ROM and is it illegal to have a ROM?

According to Nintendo, ROMs are illegal. The easiest way to understand a rom is that it's the guts of a N64 cartridge in a digital format. Nintendo is correct that people download roms just like people download mp3's. MP3's for a while, were illegal because nobody paid for them. People ripped their cd's into mp3's and then shared them online.

With GoldenEye and the GoldenEye ROM, you can create the rom with certain tools. In other words, you have the cartridge, and you upload the rom onto your PC and then use an emulator to play the game. The issue is, and Nintendo feels strongly about this, that roms are something that people acquire illegally from downloading on the internet. The fact is, they are correct.

I am not suggest or recommending downloading of illegal roms. You can do as I did, which it to connect your N64 console to your PC using various tools, and then create your own rom which you would be using on your N64 emulator on your PC. Is that illegal? Not sure, I'm not a lawyer. I can only say that you don't have to work around a copy protection on the cartridge and from what I know, then it is fine. Are the tools illegal? I doubt it. I bought my Gameshark at a store!

So is making a GoldenEye rom yourself any different than taking that music off you cd and making mp3's out of it? If that cd didn't have copy protection then in my country, I believe there is nothing wrong. Further, can you image it being illegal to copy those movies you had on VHS onto a dvd to watch? Seems crazy to me. I'm not a lawyer but to me, making a backup of your property which doesn't have any copy protection on it, is simply not illegal. I realize that every country is different. From my knowledge if something has copy protection and you work around that copy protection and make a copy, then that is illegal.

The point is, you can indeed play GoldenEye N64 the original, on your PC and online using that same amazing N64 controller. With all the new levels to use and all the new codes that have been created (like all bonds), it's like GoldenEye N64 on steroids.

Ok we've been playing the game for a little while now. I'm sure you're like everyone else trying to dominate online GoldenEye wii. Heck even single player GoldenEye 007 Wii is a struggle to decide what controller to use. Classic controller or wiimote and nunchuck? There has been some debate as to which is the preferred controller. Win more online? I'm sure you want to. I'm sure you'd like to hear from other GoldenEye Wii players who are convinced that their preferred controller is the best way to play and will help you win more.

What I've read is that the wiimote and nunchuck is actually the best controller to use. Ah, but it will take some tweaking. Nobody has found the wiimote to be easy to master GoldenEye Wii with, but players are saying it's the best. You will have to customize the wiimote controls and have some patience to master it.

Here is a quote from a player using the wiimote:  "Wiimote all the way. Been playing online and destroying people with it."

GoldenEye Wii has finally arrived! I'm sure you've bought it already. Update November 8, 2010 - I appreciate that we ALL want GoldenEye Wii cheats. Trust me I'm trying to get them for you. I found an interview with Eurocom developers who are the creators of GoldenEye 007 Wii. Here is what they said:

"What special modes and cheats can people look forward to?"

....In multiplayer, since we have moved GoldenEye into the online arena, 'cheats' are something we try to stay away from.

So that is their feeling on GoldenEye Wii cheats. That isn't to say there aren't going to be any, it's just that they are avoiding them in multiplayer.

Let the confusion begin! Well once GoldenEye Wii is released I think a problem is going to be for people finding the right GoldenEye cheats. If you Google GoldenEye cheats, you'll get N64 version. If you Google GoldenEye 007 cheats, same thing. To find GoldenEye Wii cheats, you will need to include Wii in the search or you will be frustrated. Just a thought. I'm sure Nintendo and Activision are aware of the issue, but cheats is a big search for GoldenEye. It may be hard for GoldenEye Wii players to find the cheats they need. That's where we hope to help!
